Flannelled Fools and Foolish Flannel

For the umpteenth time this week, I heard a bloke say on the radio this morning that 'the entire country' had been excited about some recent cricket match.
The evidence we keep being given for this is the astonishing fact that 8 million people were watching it on television.
Well yes, it is pretty amazing that 8 million people would ever tune in to cricket.
But surely that means that around 52 million people were not watching it?
So where does the 'entire country' come into it?

For comparison, Eastenders, which has been floundering recently, pulled in an audience of over 10 million this Monday.
If the media exaggerated the level of interest in politics to the extent that they exaggerate the interest in sport, people would say they had taken leave of their senses.
You may recall that ITV1 came badly unstuck when they tried to capitalise on the nation's supposed obsession with football and put it on at 7pm on Saturday evenings, only to pull it within a few weeks. What the people wanted at 7pm on Saturday was Ant and Dec or Pop Idol.
Yeah! Good call, people!
They're not always wrong, you know

The thing is Mr Lupin is that the cricket is on during the day when loads of people are at work. It is finished by half six anyway.

Me and Mrs Zaphod watxhed it all, more or less.

My Little Chickadee (- WC Fields, not me being over-familiar), David Owen was a striker for the SDP and is now Lord Owen. I think you meant Michael Owen.
David Beckham once appeared on Ant and Dec's show, which proves you can have your cake and eat it.
And re Ant and Dec, it's very simple. Dec always stands on the viewer's right and is the shorter of the two, the Ernie Wise to Ant's Eric Morecambe.

zaphod, in that case, how many of the 8 million were actually watching it, apart from your goodselves, and not asleep or doing the dusting or knitting a cable stitch pullover?

oh flamin' 'eck

i've been cruelly outed: know sweet FA about footie but brain has been bizarrely infiltrated with the names of former politicians

not exactly cool

no worries re the chickadee reference - it's my URL as it happens and what my dear sweet mamma called me as a child

all that said, i'd also always prefer A&D to mr owen, who i've always felt has sth of a draculian look about him

Dracula? I don't see any resemblance. But Mr. Owen IS known for his predatory instincts.

Perhaps I am mixing up the Owens too.

Hey, I wonder if Newcastle signed the right one?

Joint statement by Stelios Haji-Ioannou founder of easyJet and many other easy businesses and Dannii Minogue sister of Kylie Minogue.
I am fed up with people in the gutter press and internet blogs calling me a Big Bubble Queen and Gay Greek etc I wish to make clear that like ashley cole i will sue anyone by taking court action and will claim damages.
I Stelios Haji-Ioannou am definately not gay in any way at all i have had many high profile relationships with real women such as danny minogue and with regard to my legal policy I am sure you will understand that i, stelios haji-ioannou cannot permit others to use my family name and the smear campaign i have had to endure without the certainty that i will sue the person or publication for libel due to rights in my character and family name being prejudiced. It follows that no use should be made of the stelios haji-ioannou name (or anything similar to it) and if any smear relating to gay or homosexual practices is made you will be punished to the full extent of the law. And in addition i will seek damages and compensation. the though of being gay repulses me and has brought a great deal of shame and embarrisement to my family especially as it is not true. i have nothing against gays or lesbians personally and i do not wish to offend anyone at all please do not misunderstand me i employ many gays but i will sue anyone who calls me a homosexual

please show your support for ashley cole and stelios both wrongly accused
